Welcome to the Kingsbridge Youth Group
Our History
In 1999, the parish of St Joseph's Kingsbridge decided to renovate the basement of the century old church in an effort to form a more vital youth ministry. A comfortable carpeted area with couches was established, and parishioners donated a pool table and a ping pong table. The St Joseph's CWL donated money to purchase supplies and religious programming materials, and the doors were opened in the fall of the year.
Originally open to youth grades 6-8, the first year saw a membership of 10 youth. Every year since, the Kingsbridge Youth Group has grown, and is currently open to all youth Grade 6 and up. For the year 2005-2006, 68 different youth attended our meetings, fairly evenly divided between high school and elementary ages, with an average attendance of approximately 40.
Our Meetings
Our group meets every other Friday night in the basement of St Joseph's Kingsbridge church from 8-10pm. Admission is $1 on an honour system - this money is used to supply the pop and snacks for the meetings.
Typically our meetings start with mixer activities, continues on to our hugely popular religion segment, which leads into our wildly anticipated games activities, and ends with snacks and free time. Whenever possible our meeting includes outdoor activities, so the youth are expected to come dressed for the weather at all times. For inclement weather and free time, we have available the pool table, ping pong, air hockey, foozball, magnetic darts, board games and a TV/DVD/VCR.
The high school and elementary students meet concurrently and have separate as well as shared activities. Our high schoolers are able and expected to take leadership roles in both planning and leading games and religious activities. Our elected executive are responsible for inventory, attendance, the treasury, purchasing materials, and clean up, all for which community credit is given.
The Youth Group also works as a group within the parish, doing clean up and food booth duties at CWL and K of C sponsored events, as well as yard cleanup around the church and rectory, and "spring cleaning" of the church.
The Kingsbridge Youth Group also tries to contribute to the spiritual well being of the parish. In 2005-2006, almost 40 youth were involved in Stations of the Cross in Shadow on Good Friday, as well as presenting a Cantata with the Choir on Christmas Eve. There is also a Passover Seder for high schoolers only .
If you have any questions, the leader of our group is Jennifer Miltenburg. Our page is still under construction and any comments or ideas are appreciated.
